Trip Overview
MUZTAGH ATA
Muztagh Ata is also called “Father of the Ice Mountains” in the local Uyghur dialect. Our expedition follows the distinct southern flank of the walls overlooking the Kartamak glacier.
This 7,000-metre peak is part of the northern ridge of the Tibetan plateau in Xinjiang province, western China. It lies at the centre of Asia’s great mountain ranges, such as the Karakoram to the south, the Pamir to the west, and the Kun Lun and Tien Shan to the north.
Muztagh Ata is one of the ‘easiest’ 7,000-metre peaks to reach from a technical point of view, and one of the highest skiable mountains in the world. Following the first ascent on skis by an American expedition led by Ned Gilletee, Muztagh Ata gained popularity as a ‘ski mountain’, as the ascent route is generally covered in deep snow. The slope is perfect for skiing and presents no major objective danger.
The first ascent was made by a large group of Chinese and Russian climbers in 1956, following the West Ridge, which has become the standard route.

Our co-founder, Norbu Sherpa, is a qualified and experienced expedition Sherpa, as well as a skilled leader who has climbed Everest nine times and led many clients to other 8,000 metre peaks, as well as to Muztagh Ata.
